These theme-based asana classes take you on an integrated journey of thoughtful inquiry (mind), courageous engagement (heart), and experiential embodiment (body). Each class begins with a brief exploration of philosophical teachings and/or a mythic narrative of yoga. We then physicalize the teachings in asana practice through choreographed sequences of postures, and internalize the teachings in contemplative meditative practices. The yoga tradition offers a wide and deep ocean of wisdom, filled with rigorous philosophical traditions, rich mythic narrative and symbolic iconography. We will explore these teachings in both their historical context, as well as how we, as modern yogis, may derive meaning from these ancient wisdom traditions. If you wish to dive into this ocean of wisdom and engage the teachings while practicing on the mat, these classes are for you. Our exploration will be entirely secular in nature; no belief required.
Join Noah for this series of strong all-levels yoga classes inspired by and themed with teachings and stories from the Bhagavad Gita and the greater epic Mahabharata. In the Bhagavad Gita, the otherwise indomitable warrior Arjuna finds himself faced with a paralyzing choice, and at last learns he must converse with wisdom greater than his own conscience in order to move forward. We enter this ancient tale to find out about our lives today, here and now, in all that is relevant and present. In this conversation in the middle of a battlefield, Krishna, in the role of humble charioteer, is serving as Arjuna’s friend, advisor and teacher. What remains to be seen is what more Krishna reveals himself to be, inspiring Arjuna to act, understand, and commit to being his fullest self.
Conscious Use of Myth and Metaphor
Yoga facilitates the theatre of mind, body and heart, giving us the opportunity to explore the analytic and creative sides of our brains. In this workshop we will navigate and study yoga philosophy, mythology and practical educational theory with a focus on applying this to yoga practice and life, as well as sequencing and teaching strategies for teachers. On the Field of Dharma
The opening setting and context for the Bhagavad Gita inspires this full-spectrum asana class with an emphasis on standing poses. We will explore the possible meanings of dharma, in body/mind/heart, and what it may mean to lay claim to the field of dharma and to “stand in yoga,” yogastahah [BhG 2.48]
The Yoga of Action
Inspired by the teachings of action, karma-yoga, this session will build strength and opening in a steady and skillful sequence to backbending peak postures. Krishna will tell us that we are always acting; the question is whether or not we are doing it well. “Yoga is skill in action” – yogah karmasu kaushalam [BhG 2.50]
The Yoga of Insight
Inspired by the teachings of wisdom and knowledge, jnana-yoga, this session sequences forward bends, hip openers, twists and meditation to conspire to bring you ever more deeply into your own embodied wisdom and “yoked intelligence” –buddhiyukto [BhG 2.50]
The Yoga of Devotion
Inspired by the teachings of love and devotion, bhakti-yoga, this session will challenge you, even as it systematically prepares you, for arm balance peak poses. Expect lots of core and shoulder strengthening, hip opening, and a passionate call to rise to your greatest possibilities of heartfelt commitment.
The Yoga of Equinimity
Inspired by the teachings on equanimity and the “qualities of nature,” the three gunas, this class will challenge your balance with an emphasis on vinyasa practice, standing balancing poses and inversion variations. “Yoga is evenness of mind” – yoga-samatvam [BhG 2.48]
About Workshops with Noah Mazé
Noah teaches yoga workshops all over the world. This program is for dedicated yoga students who want to take some extra time to explore postures in a meaningful, refined, methodical way and learn practical strategies for building strength, flexibility and focus. Noah will provide the attention you need to help you achieve your personal goals in your physical yoga/asana practice.
Morning asana sessions tend to be upbeat, with an emphasis on standing postures, backbends, arm balances and/or vinyasa flow. We turn inward as the sun wanes to forward bends, inversions and restorative postures. Students can expect to leave this program with a deeper, more expansive practice, and know how best to grow your yoga practice in the context of her/his own limits and boundaries.
