Deepen Your Path of Yoga in Flagstaff

This Fall there will be a 200 Hour The Mazé Method Emissary Teacher Training at The Yoga Experience in Flagstaff, Arizona. Flagstaff is a vibrant and active community that thrives on its connection to the outdoors. It is situated at the base of the San Francisco Peaks and is considered the gateway to the Grand Canyon. The studio has offered yoga in the heart of downtown since 1997, making it one of the oldest continuous yoga studios in Arizona. It boasts high ceilings, 100 year old wood floors, and windows which look out into the amazingly blue sky of Arizona and offer views of the beautiful mountain peaks.

The following is an interview between the lead Teacher Trainer for the program and owner of The Yoga Experience, Erin Widman and one of her longtime students, Brandie Lambin.

Brandie Lambin: When and how did you start practicing yoga?

Erin Widman: I have been practicing yoga since 1988. I was a freshman in college and my Psychology 101 professor mentioned what yoga was. In today’s world it seems almost unfathomable that someone would not know what yoga is until they’re 17 years old. But at the time it was so exhilarating to hear of a whole other way of looking at life and way of approaching health and spirituality, and so I jumped on board. And I’ve been practicing ever since. So it is with incredible enthusiasm that I am about to embark on teaching teachers.

Brandie: How long have you been teaching yoga?

Erin: I’ve been teaching since 2000. So almost 14 and a half years now. It’s been an incredible privilege to take this on as my job because it really feels like an opportunity to be offering myself in a way that really supports people on their path of discovery and health and wanting to be the best they can be.

Brandie: How did you meet Noah?

Erin: I started studying with Noah Maze in 2004, although he and I had been in similar trainings since 2002. I’ve known him for 12 years. I find his methodology of teaching — his attention to detail, his incorporation of philosophy and the natural world — really important in the process of bringing yoga into our contemporary lives. My studies with him really sparked that level of interest in integrating, not just the activity of what we do on our mat, but how we choose to live our lives and to pull from incredibly rich resources of philosophers and wisdom, to bring into our every day lives.

Brandie: Why did you choose to do your Teacher Training through The Mazé Method?

Erin:  The Mazé Method is a world recognized school because of Noah Mazé’s diligent work in many countries around the world. People across the world will have an understanding of what it is you’ve learned and how you’ll approach teaching. They will know you will bring forth the consistency that Noah Mazé’s methodology offers. And that’s a huge asset because there are many teacher trainings across the country, across the world.

Brandie: Can you talk a little about the The Mazé Method 200 hour Teacher Training you will be leading at The Yoga Experience in Flagstaff?

Erin: The program will start in August of 2014. We’ve put it into 2 different phases:

The first 100 hours we are calling “Deepen Your Path of Yoga.” It will be focused on delving into the practice of yoga, the philosophy of yoga, and the understanding of how all these pieces come together to inform what we are doing on the mat. It will include a lot about the body and how what we are doing on the mat affects the body. And it will also include mythology and history and philosophical lineages.

The second 100 hours, “The Art of Teaching,” starts in January of 2015. This portion will shift in focus to really bring in the art of teaching. Cultivating the actual skills of teaching can really support our ability to offer the enthusiasm we have for the practice of yoga and the knowledge that we want to share.

Brandie: Who can students talk to if they want to find out more?

Erin: Feel free at any time to email me directly at: info@theyogaexperience.com. I’m happy to talk with anyone as they work through this process of deciding whether or not this huge commitment is something to take on. It will definitely deepen your path of yoga so please join us!
